Shamrocks and Shenanigans: Ireland at the Wharf in Washington DC

15 West Homes March 14, 2024

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, Kirwan’s on the Wharf will host their Ireland at The Wharf festival on Saturday, March 16th. Check out the exciting events that bring the vibrant spirit of Ireland to DC.

Irish Dancing

The Transit Pier Stage comes alive with the lively energy and precise footwork of Irish dancers from the Boyle School of Irish Dance and McGrath Morgan Academy. Adorned in traditional costumes, these dancers captivate audiences with their graceful movements and intricate choreography. Spectators will be enchanted by the rhythmic beats of their feet and the infectious enthusiasm that radiates from the stage. With every step, the dancers showcase the timeless artistry of Irish dance to the delight of all who gather to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at the festival.

Live Music

Enjoy live music from three different bands on the District Pier Stage. Poehemia, a Baltimore-based band takes the stage at 12:30 PM to delight the crowd with their high-energy Celtic rock. Rock out with the unique blend of Irish, Americana, and a bit of punk from The 19th Street Band at 2:15 PM. Close out the festival with more Irish Americana music from the Ben-David Warner band starting at 4:15 PM.

Six Nations Rugby

The Six Nations Championship is an annual men’s international rugby competition. It involves teams from England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland, and Wales. The competition takes place over five weeks, with the fifth and final week of competition concluding on March 16th. Kirwan’s Irish Pub will have the games on the big screen for all to enjoy. Catch Ireland versus Scotland at noon and England versus France at 4:00 PM.

Learn to Play Celtic Football

Celtic football or Gaelic football is a cross between soccer and rugby and resembles Australian Rules Football. Using a round ball slightly smaller and heavier than a soccer ball, players use both their hands and feet to control the ball. Starting at noon, you can join the DC Gaels and learn how to play!

Beer Garden

No Irish festival is complete without a beer garden. The Guinness Beer Garden opens at noon with the procession of a bagpiper down the District Pier to the stage. Grab a pint of Guinness or try a Jameson whiskey cocktail!

If you are looking to get the most out of St. Patrick’s Day weekend, head to Ireland at the Wharf. With its festive atmosphere and range of activities, it’s the perfect place to celebrate all things Irish.
